Vegan Dinner Party
This week was actually pretty fun and exciting! We had a few events going on since we’re in town and one of the best nights we have had in a long time was the Vegan Dinner Party that we held on Thursday. One of our instructors, Crew, and his girlfriend are vegan so we decided to have a night at our house where everything we serve is completely vegan.
We had our cameras out and took a ton of pictures to document everything, but UNFORTUNATELY the cameras wiped when transfering them to the hard drive and we lost them. Sad sad sad.
I’m hoping that someone else took good pictures that I can steal because there were a few cameras in the house. Here’s the menu of what we served:
Appetizers/Munchies:
- Hummus with carrots and cucumber
- Guacamole and chips
- Black Bean “Hummus” dip
Main Course:
- Pizza complete with tapioca cheese, peppers, onions, faux sausage and faux pepperoni
- Black Bean Chili with Hominy
- Quinoa with peppers, onions, mango and cilantro
- Kale and Spinach Salad with Avocado Dressing
Dessert:
- Brownies
- Orange-Infused Chocolate Mousse
- Vanilla Bean Ice Cream
- Fruit Salad
And of course, since it was a vegan dinner party, there were absolutely no meat or animal products including any dairy or dairy products, eggs or honey. I actually loved everything we made and ate and thought it was delicious!
On the other hand, my husband went very hungry that night.
Again, I’m sorry about the boring, picture-less post, but I will try to get the pictures from some of the other people and post them up. We had a lot of fun all cooking together, preparing the food, telling stories, and just having a great time of fellowship.
I need more of that in my life.
Aerial Arts
Yesterday I signed up Adam and I to do a crazy aerial arts class in Austin.

What is aerial arts you ask? As in the picture above, aerial arts is a form of fitness and performance using suspended apparatuses. In other words, you’re climbing, floating and flipping your way through the air, using hoops, ropes and silks to hold yourself up. And it was AWESOME!

I first learned about this a few weeks ago and immediately thought of Cirque du Soleil… It has always been a fantasy of mine to perform Cirque-like and I knew this would be a great introduction class to learn from.
The class took place in a random warehouse in East Austin… All we needed were high ceilings and crash mats to land on! The different apparatuses we used were a trapeze, silk ropes, normal ropes, lyras (the aerial hoops), and a silk hammock.

My favorite was by far the silks. I loved how we could wrap our arms and legs up in it and then were able to balance and hold our complete body up, suspended in air.

The silks were soft, pliable, easy to maneuver, and provided a surprising amount of stability. I’m literally standing up straight in the middle of the air with the only surface being my feet wrapped in silks.

Adam liked the lyra’s the most… They’re the easiest to balance on and they can be mounted and dismounted in dozens of different ways. Finding your center and point of balance is difficult though!

We climbed, we flipped, we tucked upside down, and we got ONE HELL of a workout!
I was able to catch on fairly quickly and wanted to keep learning different tricks… I felt like I was born to fly! I think I was making the instructor teach more than she was used to because I was getting the hang of everything and was ready to move on when the rest of the class was still learning the basic moves.

At the end of class I was even invited back to take their Advanced Aerial course! Hmm… besides my biceps, triceps, shoulders and pecs feeling like they want to fall off, I think this is something I will be doing again!
(Apologies for the bad, low-quality pictures… I just figured we would take iPhone pics, but the lighting made it very difficult. We’ll bring the nice camera next time so we can document this better!)
GOTR 5K – Race Recap
Today I can proudly announce that I have officially completed one of my New Years Resolutions for 2011. I ran a 5K. I completed a race. I am no longer someone that just reads other running blogs and healthy living blogs… I got out there and did it myself.

The pride, excitement, happiness and glory I felt crossing that finish line was unbelievable. I couldn’t believe that completing my first race was achieved. I had done it! But before we get there, let’s start from the very beginning….

My first-race experience began yesterday with the packet pickup which was held at an adorable, independently owned and local women’s athletic apparel store, BettySport. I love that a local organization teamed up with a local store for the registration… The store gets a heavier traffic flow and 20% of proceeds from BettySport went to the charity as well. Win-win!

As we were doing the registration and picking up our shirts and swag bag, the GOTR girl told me that I was actually signed up as a Running Buddy. A Running Buddy was someone who gets paired up with one of the young girls running the race (aged 8 to 13) to help push them through, encourage them throughout the race and act as a guardian as they run.
I had put mine and Adam’s names down to be Running Buddies a few weeks ago but never received official confirmation. When the girl told me that we ARE official running buddies I was ECSTATIC! That also meant that all goals and times are thrown out the window now… We were no longer running for us, we were running for and with the girls and it is now all about them.

After a 6am wake-up this morning we were out of the house at 6:45 with a quick stop at Starbucks, getting us to the park at 7:20. The race began at 8, however we were told to be there by 7:30 to get paired up with our buddies. The sun was beginning to rise and there was a chill in the air… I haven’t been up this early in YEARS unless it is to jump on a plane. It was so nice to be outside, hearing the birds chirp and feel the excitement in the air.

The head coaches of GOTR lead everyone in a big group stretch to get everyone loosened up for the run. There were also people doing hair in a Goody sponsored tent, a booth with an MC on a mic making announcements and playing music like Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez, and bottles of water and Powerade getting passed out for pre-run hydration.

At about this point our team joined us. We drug two of our instructors Braeden (left), Cary (center) and Adam’s good friend Tyler (right) to do the race with us. They came, got their bibs and joined us for the stretch.

Then we finally got paired up with our Running Buddies! We actually ended up with 3 beautiful girls, Alexis, Leticia and Sharon. These girls were SO excited and SO eager to start the race. They told us all about their practices and how they run 4 times a week. They were making me nervous because I wasn’t sure if I would be able to keep up with them. Kids have so much energy…

Very shortly thereafter we all lined up behind the big inflatable arch, sang the National Anthem, did a countdown from 10 and then it was blast off. And let me confirm that YES, kids have a TON of energy. As soon as the whistle blew these girls just TOOK OFF. One thing they were not taught (or completely forgot about) is pacing. They full-on sprinted, as fast as they absolutely could, as soon as the race began. It was almost impossible to see the girls, let alone run with them, because their little 10-year-old bodies were weaving through the crowd full speed ahead.
But as you can guess, they lost steam really quickly and about 2 minutes in they took their first walking break to catch their breath and relax. It was then that Adam and I told them that we had a few miles to go and that they shouldn’t use up all their energy right away. So once they were able to stop wheezing and could breathe normally we were able to get them jogging at a comfortable pace.

The first 1.5 miles of the course were actually really tough. It had rained a lot over the past few days and the grounds were insanely muddy and slippery. We actually saw people slipping and falling into the mud because it was hard to get solid footing. Other parts of the course were covered in wood chips which, again, is hard to get solid footing on and there were a zillion ants nests that we had to dodge the entire way as well.
Our girls kept trucking along though and with the first water stop, which was just under 1 mile in, the girls took another walking break. Braeden was a GREAT sport and also stuck with the girls to help push them along. Those two were quicker than the other girl and they kept pace ahead of us almost the entire race.

After the first 1.5 mile of tough running terrain the course turned out to be beautiful. We ran towards this gorgeous lake and around it while the sun was still rising and shining brightly overhead. At about mile 2 I could tell our girl was struggling a bit so Adam and I talked a lot by asking her silly questions like what her favorite music is (pop), who her favorite singer is (Selena Gomez), if the Jonas Brothers are still cool (not as much, but still a little bit) and what her favorite subject in school is (math). The goal was to get her mind off running and make it as fun as we could!

After our 2nd water station at about 2.5 miles in the course ended up being completely uphill. It wasn’t a super steep incline, but enough to make your body work harder and use different muscles. This was where our girls were struggling the most, with good reason, so we came up with setting goals to encourage them.
We would say things like “When we pass that tree up there we’re going to start running again” and “Let’s try to pass the people in the pink shirts ahead of us.” That got a bit of a competitive streak in them which helped them to run harder.

Adam did SO WELL at encouraging them the whole way, making jokes, telling the girls they were super fast and tiring him out, and pushing them the whole way. I love when I get to see sneak peaks at what Daddy Adam will be like one day.

Once we hit the top of that hill it was about .25 miles to the finish line. When the girls could actually see the finish line they got so excited and we told them that they had to run the rest of the way. The parents, friends and coordinators all lined up along the side to cheer on the girls and encourage them for the final stretch. I wanted to take a picture of it, but I was too busy cheering on the girls and (literally) had my hand on their backs to gently guide them, not let them slow down and push them to the finish.

And they did it! The girls finished their very first race! As soon as we crossed that finish line they were given their pretty pink medals, bottles of water and Powerade. They were all hot, sweaty and full of pride. And about 10 seconds after we crossed the line the MC announced that the time was 37 minutes into the race, which meant we finished in under 37 minutes. As I said, Adam and I were no longer running for time but I definitely think we would have hit our original goal of a sub-35:00 5K.

The best part was the food spread afterwards.
They had a whole table full of varieties of breakfast tacos, donuts, bagels and pretty pink cupcakes. Our girls quickly went over to the food table to grab those breakfast tacos and eat them as fast as they could. Running really does make you hungry afterwards! And they needed to replace those lost carbs and replenish their bodies with electrolytes.

We then got to meet up with the guys and found out that Tyler (far left) was actually the overall winner of the race! He was the very first runner to cross the finish line and completed in about 23 minutes (this wasn’t an “official” race so there were no time chips, but the coordinators called his time at just past 23 minutes as he crossed the finish line). There was a guy on a bike leading the first group of runners through the trail and he kept up with the bike almost the whole way.
Tyler is a former Army Ranger and Special Forces Operator, so even though he hadn’t done any endurance or cardio training in a very long time, we were not at all surprised that he came in 1st.

We wrapped up the morning with a few group pictures, high-fives to the girls, cheering on the other runners who were still coming in, and chanting “Girls On the Run is SO MUCH FUN!”
This run was a great introduction to the racing world. It was actually the best way to break into racing because the pressure wasn’t on me anymore, the focus was on the girls, getting them to complete the race, hit their goals and have fun while doing it… Now that I know I can run a sub-37:00 5K with three 10-year-old girls, a muddy and slippery route, walking breaks every 3 minutes, and a half uphill course I am ready to jump into another race and do it for real.
With our Half Marathon coming up in August I want to see if we can squeeze another 5K or even a 10K in. It will help prepare me for the big race and keep my training on track.
Have you ever ran a race as a Running Buddy (even if it’s just with a friend)? Do you like having a partner to run with and help you through a race? Have you ran smaller races to prepare for a bigger one? Please share your experiences with me! I’m excited to learn more about this running world.
Life is Happening
Happy Friday the 13th, y’all! I am sitting here in a beautiful coffee shop in downtown Austin (Halcyon, my favorite cafe ever) doing a bit of work and thought that I haven’t posted in a while. Well the problem is, I have been struggling on what to post about. Outside of red carpet posts (and I have more coming up! There are still the Kids Choice Awards, Academy of Country Music Awards, MET Gala, and Cannes opening night!) our life has just been trucking along with no real stand-out events so I haven’t blogged in a while.
Instead I have decided to do a bunch of mini updates for you on different happenings that are going on.
Last weekend we were in NYC and I got to cross something off of my NYC to-do list: Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. We walked from Brooklyn to Manhattan and took a few pictures along the way. Other things on my NYC to-do list (yes, I have an actual list) are to go to the MOMA and the Guggenheim, the boat yard in Central Park, visit the Statue of Liberty, go to Coney Island, spend a day in Fire Island, do a weekend in Atlantic City, and eat at about a dozen different restaurants.
The best part about last weekend in NYC is that it was our last weekend traveling for the next THREE WEEKS. We have been traveling twice a week every week for the past 9 weeks and it is nice to be home for a while. We get to do normal things like take the trash to the curb, fix our ceiling in the bathroom which is breaking from an old leak, fully unpack our clothes and have normal wardrobes, water our very dead grass and cook meals at home. It will be nice.
When our 3 glorious weeks at home are done, we will be traveling back to London! The image above is from a store in NYC called MUJI and they have little blocks of city skylines… With Big Ben, the House of Parliament, Millenium Wheel and Gherkin Building, this makes up a London skyline.
We will be in London for about five weeks doing three advanced workshops and a big seminar. Of course I’m excited to be back there for a while and it will be nice to have a change of pace from the normal bootcamp that we have been running for the past year straight.
Another exciting thing going on is that tomorrow morning we are running the Girls on the Run 5K! It is my first race ever and we have convinced our team to run it with us as well. I am hoping to take my camera with so I can take pre-and-post race pictures and do a race recap. And this is bringing us one step closer to training for the Chicago Rock ‘N Roll Half Marathon in August! My goal for the race is to finish and not come in last place.
My OMG-I-Can’t-Believe-I-Did-This Goal is to complete in 35 minutes. Eeek! Wish me luck.
We are now off to Betty Sport for the race packet pick-up and then Bank of America for some international funds transfers. Have a great Friday, lovers!
White House Correspondents’ Dinner 2011
The White House Correspondents’ Dinner is the one big night where DC feels like Hollywood. This year the ‘nerd prom’ was more like the Oscars. Here are my picks for best dressed on the political red carpet!

Anna Paquin in Herve L. Leroux
Michelle Trachtenberg in Notte by Marchesa
Brooke Burke in Romona Kerveza
Amy Poehler in Theia – Totally not what she normally wears. She gets an Honorable Mention for this gown, hair and overall styling.
Cheryl Hines in Georges Hobeika Couture – My 3rd Best Dressed
All About the Details
This past weekend Adam and I were in Vegas running a workshop with our team. Vegas is always a crazy city that leads to fun stories but this time I decided to take some time to myself and visit the hotels I hadn’t been to before and enjoy the decor, designing and details that each hotel has that makes it unique. Every hotel is so different and HUGE so I spent about 8 hours one day just wandering from place to place enjoying everything. If you follow me on Twitter you might have even seen me playing #hideandtweet where I posted a picture and had people guess ‘Where in Vegas’ I was.
Here are the pictures of the beautiful detailing in different hotels! If you have your own personal favorite let me know. :)
Horned Frog statue at the airport! It’s tradition for me to take a picture there every time we go to Vegas.
The Shoppes at the Palazzo. This was a huge mechanical butterfly opening and closing its wings every few seconds
Blown glass ceiling at the Bellagio
Butterfly floor at the Encore right in front of XS nightclub
Red chandeliers in the casino of Encore
Cosmopolitian bar at the hotel reception
Cosmopolitian hallway with an old spin-dial telephone
Chandelier Bar at Cosmopolitian. It’s an actual 3-story bar INSIDE a chandelier made out of Swarovsky crystals
A restaurant in the new City Center
The new Cosmopolitian Hotel is insanely gorgeous and looks like an episode of Sex and the City threw up on it. It is all blinged out in Swarovsky crystals, sequins, rich velvets, silver and grey colors and beautiful lighting everywhere. It is one of my new favorite hotels and I would love to stay there in the future.
We don’t often get time to ourselves when we are traveling for work so I was really appreciative that I got a day to myself to wander around and do this. Maybe I need to take more time each week to stop and smell the roses.
A Wedding Fit for a Princess
“You’ve got to know the rules to break them. That’s what I’m here for, to demolish the rules but to keep the tradition.” – Alexander McQueen
Prince William and the Dutchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, in her Alexander McQueen bridal gown and antique Cartier tiara
This past Friday, April 29, 2011, Adam and I stayed up to watch the Royal Wedding! Well, it didn’t take much for us to stay up because we were on the west coast, so the Wedding coverage began at 1am our time. So after grabbing drinks and meeting up with old friends, we ran back to our hotel room and turned on CBS and CNN (yes, 2 different TVs with different coverage on… And only because they didn’t have E! in the hotel) to watch the entire thing until 5am when Adam forced me to turn off the TV.
I was far more excited for the Wedding than my British husband was and I was actually running around the hotel suite shrieking like a little girl waiting for the Queens arrival, Kate’s arrival, seeing the dress and watching the ceremony. And of course, the outfits and hats of the guests were so exciting.
There were a lot of fashion-forward outfits considering it is such a traditional affair. Here’s my breakdown below of who I liked and thought stood out!
Princess Victoria of Sweden in Elie Saab
Prince Harry’s plus one, Chelsy Davy, in Alberta Ferretti
Dutchess of Cornwall and Prince Charles’ wifey, Camilla Bowles, in Anna Valentine with a Philip Treacy hat
Prince Albert of Monaco’s fiance, Charlene Wittstock, in Akris (complete with gloves! and love the collar)
Prime Minister’s wife, Samantha Cameron, in Burberry
Socialite Tara Palmer-Tompkinson in Deborah Milner
Mother of the Bride, Carole Middleton, in Catherine Walker and a Jane Corbett hat
David Beckham in Ralph Lauren and Victoria Beckham in a dress from her FW2011 line and Christian Louboutin shoes (she is VERY pregnant, by the way… Look at those shoes!)
Sister of the Bride and Maid of Honor Pippa Middleton in Alice Temperley for the reception
Queen of England, Elizabeth II, in Angela Kelly
Singer Joss Stone in Hobbs (absolutely love this look from head to toe)
Princess Eugene (left) in Vivienne Westwood and Princess Beatrice (right) in Valentino with a Philip Treacy hat
My favorite look of the event is Pippa Middleton in Alexander McQueen, her Maid of Honor Dress… She is absolutely gorgeous.
Field of Dreams
American Apparel Leotard worn as a shirt, Zara Leopard Skirt, Aldo Ibanez Shoes
After months of reading my favorite style blogs like Fashion Toast, Sea of Shoes, the Glamourai, and Cupcakes and Cashmere, I have finally done my own style post. This is where I will put up pictures of what I wear while going to events, running around town, going out at night, and any other random happenings that come up in life.
My own personal style is something I have been trying to grow and play with for the past year or so. Before then just about EVERYTHING I wore was black. Now I am getting fun separates, incorporating color, and looking for investment pieces. Today’s outfit was worn while running errands around Austin, taking Adam to the dentist and then going on a lunch date. Sometimes it’s fun to get out of the basic jeans-and-t-shirt routine, even if it’s just for an afternoon with your husband.
And of course, leopard steals my heart.
Nails are OPI Black Cherry Chutney as a base coat and topped with Deborah Lippmann Ruby Red Slipper
And sometimes full skirts just make me want to twirl around like a little girl.
*Photos are courtesy of the husband. Thanks babe.
